The 10 Minute Tidy

I don’t know about you, but for me, clutter equals chaos.

I hate stepping on things every time I turn around, toys being strewn about the house, and the kitchen counter suddenly becoming a handy shelf for everyone to stick their stuff on.

Systems are going to be our saving grace here. It will take training and practice, but it is totally possible to have a tidy home with small people living underfoot. How are we going to do this? With the 10 minute tidy.

It really is as easy as it sounds – set a timer, turn on some loud music, and tidy! Here are some practical steps to creating an effective 10 minute tidy:

  1. Set expectations – will each person in your family clean a different room? How will they know when to start and stop?
In our family, I act as the manager. Our kids are still very young, so they need a lot of direction. As they grow older, we’ll shift so that each person has a specific task during the tidy.
  2. Use the same music each time – when your family hears that music, they’ll be ready to work!
  3. Create a reminder so you don’t forget. You can set it up as a recurring event in your calendar, set an alarm, or write it in your planner.

Our family has 2-10 minute tidy sessions each day. We tidy before we eat lunch and again before bed. It gives us a nice reset mid-day and sets us up for success for the following day (not to mention the epic dance party we enjoy as we tidy).

Don’t wait to start this – it will reduce stress, reduce clutter, and even add some fun to your day!
